Make generating structured workouts as simple as texting yourself
Plain language in, structured session out — the workflow everyday athletes actually finish.
If building a workout takes longer than the warm-up, the tool failed.
You already know the session. You said it in the group chat: “tomorrow threshold, 3×12, not a hero day.” The software should take that sentence and put steps on a calendar — not open a wizard with twelve dropdowns.
The bar
Texting yourself works because it is:
- one box
- plain language
- done in under a minute
- sitting on the device you already unlock 200 times a day
Structured workouts should feel like that. Not like filing a tax form. Not like drawing a circuit diagram.
What “structured” actually means
A session the computer can execute:
- warm-up
- repeats with work and rest
- a target (power, HR, pace) or open
- cool-down
That is a tree of steps, not a novel. You should be able to see it before you pin it to Thursday.
Two ways in (both valid)
Type it in a real UI. Name, sport, generate or edit steps, drop it on the week. No chat required. Prefer this if you like dragging intervals.
Say it in an assistant. ChatGPT, Claude, or the in-app describe box. Same destination: a workout object, then a push to Wahoo / Garmin / a file.
The mistake is treating the assistant as the workout. The assistant is a keyboard. The calendar is the record. The device is the payoff.
Walkthrough for the chat path: ChatGPT workout onto a bike computer.
A prompt that behaves
Bad: “Make me a good bike workout.” You will get a story.
Better:
Bike, ~90 minutes. Easy 20. Then 3×12 minutes around 95% FTP with 6 minutes easy. Easy home. No pep talk.
Then look at the steps. If rest is wrong, fix it in the editor — do not start a new chat thread about feelings.
Keep the week honest
Generating is easy. The calendar lying is expensive.
- Put the session on the day you will ride it.
- Push to the device before you leave the house. Cellular on a computer is not a plan.
- One recording of the effort. See why one ride becomes three activities.
What to skip
You do not need periodization software to send 3×12 to a head unit. You do not need a coach seat for a solo Tuesday. Features everyday athletes don’t need is the longer version.
Simple is not stupid. Complicated often is.
Bottom line
Plain language in. Structured workout out. Device gets the file, not the essay.
If that takes more than a text to yourself, use a smaller tool.
