How to get a ChatGPT workout onto a bike computer or watch

From chat text to a structured session on the head unit — without copy-paste hell.

ChatGPT will write you a beautiful session. Your Wahoo or Garmin will not read the essay.

The missing middle is structure + delivery. Plain language in. A real workout object out. Then a push or a file the device already understands.

You do not need an “AI training plan app.” You need the file on the head unit.

Why copy-paste fails

A typical chat output looks like:

15 min easy, then 4×8 min at threshold with 4 min easy, then 10 min cool down.

That is a paragraph. Devices want:

  • sport
  • step list (work / rest / repeat)
  • durations
  • targets (power, HR, pace, or open)

Without that, you re-type the session in Garmin Connect or the ELEMNT app. You will mis-count the rest interval. Everyone does.

The path that actually works

1. Get a structured workout, not a pep talk

Ask for intervals with durations and targets. Ask it not to narrate.

Better prompt:

Cycling. Warm up 15 min easy. 3×10 min at 95–100% FTP, 5 min easy between. Cool down 10 min. No commentary. Just the session.

Still not a device file. But it is close enough to parse.

2. Parse it into a real workout

You need something that turns that text into steps: work, rest, repeats. In Based Training that is the in-app “describe a workout” flow, or ChatGPT/Claude connected over MCP so the assistant writes the workout into the calendar instead of into the chat transcript.

Other tools exist (spreadsheets, TrainingPeaks notes, ZWO generators). The test is the same: can you see the structure before it hits the device?

If you cannot inspect the steps, do not push it.

3. Deliver to the device

Options, honest:

Path What you get Pain
Push via vendor API / unofficial Garmin Workout appears in the device library Needs a connected account
FIT / TCX / ZWO file You import once Manual, easy to lose
Screenshot of the chat Nothing This is the trap

“On the watch. Not in a PDF.” Same rule for chat windows.

4. Record the ride from that workout

Start the structured session on the computer or watch. Do not start a second generic ride on the other device. Otherwise you get three activities for one threshold set.

ChatGPT vs a real UI

Chat is great when you already know the session in words.

A UI is better when you want to drag a rest interval, change 8 minutes to 10, and see the whole tree. Based Training does both on purpose: generate in the app, or tell ChatGPT. Neither path is the product by itself.

If you hate assistants, skip them. Simple is not stupid.

Claude, Cursor, and “MCP”

If your assistant speaks MCP, it can use tools instead of dumping markdown: list the week, create a workout, put it on Thursday. ChatGPT can do this when the app exposes a remote MCP server (Based Training does, at /mcp, with login).

You still should open the calendar once and glance at the steps. Assistants hallucinate 3×15 when you asked for 3×10. The device will happily make you suffer the wrong set.

What this is not

  • Not a coach. The model does not know your life.
  • Not medical advice.
  • Not a promise that every exotic brick survives Garmin’s workout schema.

It is logistics: text → structure → device.

Bottom line

A ChatGPT workout on a bike computer is a three-step job. Chat is step one. Do not stop there.

Tell it the session. Parse it. Push it. Then go ride.
