Can I use ChatGPT as a training app?

ChatGPT writes a solid workout. It does not remember your week, and it cannot send the session to your watch or bike computer.

Short answer: Use ChatGPT to write the session. It is good at that. It will not remember your week tomorrow, and it cannot put the workout on your watch or bike computer. Using it as your trainer runs into those same two limits.

Use Based Training

Based Training keeps the calendar, your recent rides and runs, and the connections to your devices. Connect ChatGPT when you want to talk a session out. The chat can read that history, then send the workout after you confirm the steps.

You still check it. The model will invent a session if you let it.

The send steps are in How to generate a workout in ChatGPT and send it to a device. Connecting the assistant is in the setup guide.

Where ChatGPT is good

Writing the workout. Say you have 45 minutes, a trainer, and tired legs from Sunday. It comes back with a warm-up, some threshold work, rest, and a cool-down you can actually read. That draft is the useful part.

Garmin Connect makes you click every step. A blank note makes you invent the structure yourself. ChatGPT is faster than both when the job is to turn a messy idea into a session.

Use it for a first draft of Tuesday. Then stop treating the chat as the place your training lives.

What it does not remember

A training week is a sequence. The next session depends on the last one, on how the legs feel, and on the race that is already on the calendar. ChatGPT starts from the message in front of it.

Close the tab and that context is gone. The next chat does not know you rode two hours yesterday unless you paste it in, or a saved memory happens to contain a scrap of it. Memory is not a training log. It does not have your calendar. It does not have your threshold unless this conversation includes the number. It will write 4×8 the morning after a race if you forgot to mention the race.

A custom GPT, or a project stuffed with old plans, makes the drafts more consistent. It still did not see the file on the watch. Nothing in that setup updates because you went and rode.

When ChatGPT is connected to Based Training, it can ask for recent activities, your thresholds, and what is already planned. It has to ask. After you close the chat, that look-up is over. The record stays in the app.

What it cannot send

There is no button in ChatGPT that puts a structured workout on a Garmin, a Wahoo, or a Karoo. You get text. The device wants a sport, a list of steps, durations, and a target.

So you retype it in Garmin Connect or the ELEMNT app, or you ride whatever you remember. The rest interval is the first thing that goes missing. That is the practical problem in How to generate a workout in ChatGPT and send it to a device.

TrainingPeaks and TrainerRoad keep a real calendar. So does a hub like intervals.icu. They are training apps. They do not give ChatGPT a way to push the workout for you.

If you still want to plan in chat

Keep ChatGPT for the draft. Keep the week somewhere that is still there tomorrow, and send from there.

Connect it to Based Training, look at the steps, then push to the Wahoo, Garmin, or Karoo you already connected. ChatGPT still only writes the session. The week, and the send, live in the app.

If you would rather skip the chat, generate the session in the app. The easiest way to generate a workout and send it to a device.

Honest limits

  • Look at the steps before you send. A made-up 3×15 still runs if you push it.
  • Not a coach. It does not know the kid was up all night, unless you say so in this chat.
  • Not medical advice.
  • Garmin sign-in on the send path is experimental. The password is not saved. Read the privacy policy.

Bottom line

Let ChatGPT write the workout. Do not keep your training in the chat, and do not expect the chat to reach your devices. That part needs an app that remembers the week and can send the workout.
